As winter gives way to spring, it's time to get down to the first garden chores. This is the time to take care of your plants, soil and equipment so that you can enjoy a beautiful and healthy garden all season long. Here are the most important steps to take at the start of spring.
1. Cleaning Up After the Winter
Before you start any planting, it's a good idea to tidy up your garden. Remove any leftover leaves, branches and other debris that may have accumulated over the winter. If you have left protective mulch in your garden, check that it has not started to decompose and is not harming your plants.
2. Pruning Trees and Shrubs
Early spring is the ideal time for sanitary pruning of trees and shrubs. Remove dry, diseased and damaged branches to improve the appearance and health of your plants. Remember that not all species tolerate pruning well at this time of year — magnolias and forsythias, for example, are better pruned after flowering.
3. Loosen and Fertilise the Soil
Winter may have made the soil in your garden compact and not very permeable. It is a good idea to loosen it up, for example with a pitchfork or hoe, to improve aeration and make it easier for plants to take up nutrients. This is also a good time to fertilise for the first time, preferably with compost, manure or mineral fertilisers adapted to the needs of the plants.
4. Planting the First Plants
Early spring is the time to sow some vegetables and flowers. You can already sow radishes, lettuce, spinach or sugar snap peas. If you are planning colourful beds, it is worth planting pansies, daisies or primroses, which can withstand the colder nights.
5. Lawn Care
Your lawn needs to recover after winter. First remove any lingering leaves and dry grass, then scarify the lawn to help oxygenate the roots. If you notice any cavities, reseed the lawn and apply growth stimulating fertiliser.
6. Preparing Your Garden Equipment
Don't forget your tools! Secateurs, shears and mowers should be sharpened and maintained. If you have an irrigation system, check its condition and clean the filters.
7. Prepare Tomato Supports and Plant Supports
Spring is the ideal time to prepare tomato supports, tomato cages and other plant supports for tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables. Metal tomato spirals and tomato stakes will give your plants stable support throughout the growing season. It is a good idea to prepare them in advance so that you have them ready when you plant your seedlings.
Summary
The first spring work in the garden is a key moment that will affect the condition of the plants throughout the year. Proper soil preparation, tree, shrub and lawn care and efficient equipment will keep your garden healthy, beautiful and ready for the full season. It is worth taking these steps now to enjoy lush vegetation and a bountiful harvest! Remember, however, to carry out all work in accordance with the temperature outside, avoiding frosty weather, which can damage the plants.
